‘Fleeing Criminal’ Injury

If you have been injured by a fleeing criminal then you may be entitled to an award from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA). This may be where a bystander is pushed to the floor by a fleeing shoplifter or struck by a vehicle when the criminal is evading capture by the police.

The actual crime being committed at the time does not have to be a crime of violence as in the example above of the fleeing shoplifter – it is being knocked over that is the crime of violence giving the entitlement to claim.

You can also claim if you are injured while assisting the police or other law enforcement officers in the apprehension of a criminal. Again the criminal does not have to be involved in a crime of violence but it must be shown that the injured person was taking an exceptional but, in all the circumstances, justified risk.
