The CICA is a government-funded organisation that makes payments to the victims of violent crime which includes sexual assault, abuse, and rape.

The abuse may have been over a period of time or a one-off incident; it may have been committed by a teacher, a church official, a friend of the family, or even a family member.

Regardless of the circumstances of the attack you are entitled to seek an award of compensation for the assault.

The CICA has a requirement that all applications are lodged within two years of the offence being committed. The CICA are quite strict with this requirement and rarely relax this rule but when they do it is usually in relation to crimes of sexual assault/abuse or rape. They understand that, quite often, people who have been abused don’t want to come forward, and it can be a number of years before they are capable of speaking to the police.
